Is it a universally acknowledged truth that all us girls ever wanted for our hair was for it to be, thick, luscious, gleaming, smooth like ice, as soft as silk and for it to be instantly covetable by the members of our own sex and immediately noticed by those of the opposite. Am I right or I am right it’s not much to ask is it?
Sadly or rather frustratingly so, the cold hard truth is that we spend an awful lot of time striving to achieve locks worthy of a full page spread in Vogue, locks that with one quick swish and a coy glance over the shoulder later alerting bystanders that yeah, we mean business. Ding! Reality checks, boo! Thinking back to all those precious pennies and pounds more to the point that have been spent on trips to the salon; hair care in all it’s varied greatness, searing hot straightners, conical tongs, wide barrelled tongs, Velcro rollers, heated rollers, throw in a well meaning self inflicted trim and we have a whole load of history there.
So where do we progress from here, the important point is to remember there is a whole load of expertise available, I am going to bring some of that to you lucky readers today. Join me….
Problem Number One: How do I get my hair smooooooth like silk?
The science section:
Not really science, more just tips and tricks.
1. Wash your with a shampoo that is specifically formulated to achieve smooth hair; opt for a shampoo that also suits your hairs type those with fine hair do not want it laden down with product. Buy hair care products that have active ingredients such as silk proteins. These will be ultra moisturising and help you on your way to perfectly smooth hair. Joico silk result smoothing shampoo has more active ingredients in it than a Heston Blumenthal recipe; it contains 19 amino acids crucial in achieving superstar locks. Other products which are perfect for achieving smooth hair are the: Paul Mitchell smoothing range and the Silky Sexy Hair Range
2. Invest in a good deep conditioning treatment and pamper yourself once a week, twice if your hair is exceptionally dry. This will help add moisture to your hair, leaving it looking sleek and nourished.
3. When you have rinsed your hair thoroughly of all shampoo and conditioner, give your hair a final 30 second blast of cold water. Bracing! Also it will seal in moisture and give your hair brilliant shine.
4. When you are blow drying your hair, which I know is time consuming but it is essential to achieve optimum sleekness; the jealously on everyone’s faces will be worth it. If possible and without inflicting the dreaded ‘dead arm’ on you, point the hairdryer nozzle downwards from root to tip. This will encourage the hair follicle to lay flat, banishing frizz and promoting shine.
5.Once you are all straightened and ready to rock, run a little (little mind) pea sized amount of serum through your hair focusing on the ends. This will deal with pesky fly aways and leave you with the silky smooth hair you have always dreamed of.
If you are in want of a more long term solution to banishing frizz and achieving ultra smooth hair the Brazilian blow dry could be for you. Developed in Brazil this revolutionary technique is now available in the UK. The Brazilian blow dry is a process where a specifically formulated keratin treatment is applied to the hair and sealed in with hot irons, you then have to not wash your hair for 72 hours and the results are smooth, shiny hair that is immune to frizz! Tempted?
The Brazilian blow dry works on all hair types even coloured, it is specifically beneficial to those with dry or damaged hair. This process is kinder on hair than prior straightening treatments it does not alter the hairs structure it just banishes frizz, strengthens and adds shine. This means that you can still style your hair in curls or waves, it won’t be left brittle and poker straight, just more manageable and super smooth. This treatment is rather expensive but the results speak for themselves and it does last between 3 and 4 months.

I’ve tried everything to get smooth silky and shiny hair. When I was growing up and skint I tried everything from a homemade egg hair mask (rinsed off with hot water no less!) to a beer rinse. Now I’m no longer a skint teenager I realise that nothing beats good products (preferably not our of my Mum’s kitchen) and a decent set of hair straighteners – don’t know how I managed before
